2015 Annual Gateway History Conference
On Saturday April 25, 2015, the Sawmill Museum, Windmill Cultural Center, and Clinton Public Library will host the first annual Gateway History Conference at the Sawmill Museum, 2231 Grant St. in Clinton. The conference will feature presentations on a variety of historical topics related to the event's theme, Where the Lincoln Road Meets the Mississippi: A Conference on Industry, Commerce, and Community in the Iowa-Illinois Gateway Area, 1835-Present.
The opening keynote address will be delivered by Wisconsin-based writer Clark Kidder, author of Emily's Story: The Brave Journey of an Orphan Train Rider. Kidder is also co-producer and co-writer of the Iowa Public Television documentary West by Orphan Train, based on his book. The panel sessions include scholars, public history professionals, and local history enthusiasts grouped into four general topic areas: Early History, Immigration and Emigration, Religion and Belief, and Commerce and Industry. Each panel will be followed by a question and answer period with the audience. The conference will conclude with a screening of Country Schools: One Room, One Nation, an Emmy-nominated documentary by Quad Cities-area filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle. Jackson County preservationist Caroline Bredekamp will be on hand to introduce and discuss the film.
The conference is free and open to the public. Though registration is not required, the organizers encourage those interested in attending to RSVP.Images
